Application Walkthrough

Follow these steps to complete your application. Pay attention to friction-point tips.

1

Apply online, by phone, or in person

1-2 hours

Apply at ssa.gov/applyfordisability, call 1-800-772-1213, or visit your local SSA office.

Friction Point

The online application saves your progress and is the most efficient option. Phone wait times can exceed 60 minutes.

2

SSA reviews your application

3-6 months

SSA checks non-medical eligibility (work credits, SGA) before sending to your state Disability Determination Services (DDS).

Friction Point

This initial review takes 3-6 months. About 65% of initial applications are denied — this is normal and does not mean you don't qualify.

3

Reconsideration (if denied)

3-5 months

Request reconsideration within 60 days of denial. Submit additional medical evidence.

Friction Point

Get a detailed letter from your treating physician specifically addressing how your condition prevents you from performing ANY type of work — not just your previous job.

4

ALJ Hearing (if denied again)

12-18 months

Request a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge within 60 days of reconsideration denial.

Friction Point

This is where most approvals happen (about 50% approval rate). Strongly consider hiring an SSDI attorney — they work on contingency (paid from backpay, max 25% or $7,200).
